Carine Roitfeld Breaks Beauty Stereotypes

Style is an eloquent instrument; a tool with the ability to move forward, challenge the rules and enforce different ideologies. Her career is a testimony of how far a unique sense of style can take a person. Ever since her earliest days as a model, Carine Roitfeld stood out amidst thousands who claimed to love fashion, but never dared to swim against the tide. The iconic stylist is credited with inventing the Gucci brand along with Tom Ford and Mario Testino. Acting as Ford’s muse and a daring stylist, her work is currently referred to as a trusted reference of the 1990s.

Nonetheless, it did not take her long until she found her way to the publishing industry, where she held various coveted titles, including Editor in Chief of French Vogue. Her 10-year tenure gave the Parisian publication a bold reincarnation. One of her most unforgettable covers was seen on stands in 2007, when she chose a black, bearded drag star as her main subject. However, her decision to establish her own publication in 2012 opened a new door to revolutionary editorials.

Roitfeld's CR Fashion Book was the first to cross traditional borders and celebrate modesty wholeheartedly. The bi-annual publication pioneered by casting the veiled model, Halima Aden, as a cover star. Known for her provocative work, tendency to challenge boundaries and advocate a wider spectrum of beauty, Roitfeld was the first editor in chief to put modesty at the forefront. The 10th issue of CR did not only challenge stereotypes, but it also evoked a global conversation regarding beauty in 2018.

According to Roitfeld, fashion has the ability to shift narrative, hence eliminate discrimination and hatred. Nonetheless, not many enjoy unlimited freedom, which is necessary when defying old-school rules. As the mastermind behind her own publication, she chooses to favor the less obvious choices and shed light on marginalized women. The unexpected cover did not only stir controversy, it also went on to inspire various publications and designers around the globe. In a few months, Aden became one of the fashion world's most celebrated faces. From Paris to Milan, she became a runway regular, selected by the biggest names in the industry.

With that said, Roitfeld was the first to use many of the today's popular cover girls – such as Gigi Hadid, Paris Jackson, Lara Stone, etc. As they each represent a different aesthetic, the publishing connoisseur is always keen on maintaining a curious approach as well as the element of shock.
